Carriage Requirements
– SOLAS Chap.III/7.3;

An immersions suit or anti-exposure suit of an appropriate size shall be provided for every person assigned to crew the rescue boat or assigned to the marine evacuation system party.

  1. The paragraph applies to all cargo ships.
  2. An immersion suit of an appropriate size shall be provided for every person on board the ship. However, for ships other than bulk carriers, as defined in Chap.IX/1, these immersion suits need not be required if the ship in constantly engaged on voyages in warm climates where, in the opinion of the Administration, immersion suits are unnecessary.
  3. If a ship has any watch or work stations which are located remotely from the place or places where immersion suits are normally stowed, including remotely located survival craft carried in accordance with Chap.III/31.1.4 additional immersion suits of an appropriate size shall be provided at these locations for the number of persons normally on watch or working at those locations at any time.
    (supplement) At least two sets of immersion suits are to be provided for the stored position of the additional liferaft required by Chap.III/31.1.4 (IACS UI SC213 Rev.4).
  4. Immersion suits shall be so placed as to be readily accessible and their position shall be plainly indicated.
  5. The immersion suits required by this regulation may be used to comply with the requirements of Chap.III/7.3.

Inflatable lifejackets

  • A lifejacket which depends on inflation for buoyancy shall have not less than two separate compartments and comply with all requirements for ordinary lifejacket, and shall:
  • Inflate automatically on immersion, be provided with a device to permit inflation by a single manual motion and be capable of being inflated by mouth;
  • In the event of loss of buoyancy in any one compartment be capable of complying with all requirements for ordinary lifejacket;
  • Shall have buoyancy which is not reduced by more than 5% after 24h submersion in fresh water after inflation by means of the automatic mechanism.

An adult life-jacket shall be so constructed that:

  • shall not sustain burning or continue melting after being totally enveloped in a fire for a
    period of 2 seconds.
  • at least 75% of persons, who are completely unfamiliar with the lifejacket, can correctly don
    it within a period of one min without assistance, guidance or prior demonstration;
  • after demonstration, all persons can correctly don it within a period of one minute without
    assistance;
  • it is clearly capable of being worn in only one way or, as far as is practicable, cannot be
    donned incorrectly;
  • it is comfortable to wear;
  •  it allows the wearer to jump from a height of at least 4.5 m into the water without injury and
    without dislodging or damaging the lifejacket.

Required according to SOLAS regulations Chapter II Reguation 17. “All ships shall carry at least two fireman’s outfits complying with the requirements.”

According to SOLAS requirements the minimum number of fireman’s outfit required on board are as follows:

  • for vessels between 500-2500 tons minimum two sets are required.
  • for vessels between 2500-4000 tons minimum three sets are required.
  • for vessels 4000 tons and above minimum four sets are required.

In addition, two fireman’s outfits shall be provided for tankers. 

Each fireman’s outfit must consist of protective clothing,  one self-contained breathing apparatus, one lifeline with a belt or a suitable harness, one flame safety lamp, one rigid helmet, boots and gloves, protective clothing, and one fire axe. 

The IMO regulation (SOLAS regulation 10.10.4) requires all new ships from 1st July 2014 to equip their firefighting teams with at least two intrinsically safe radios for critical fire fighter communications. Vessels built prior to 1st July 2014 need to comply to the new SOLAS regulations by 1 July 2018.
